Improving health through child-centered activities

Diemo Primary School was one of the pilot centers set up in conjunction with Plan-Kenya. It is situated in a local primary school in a rural setting close to Lake Victoria. AfriAfya trained the teachers on the use of modern ICTs and equipped the school with a computer, printer and a World Space receiver. The teachers then passed on these skills to the children and the multiplier effect has helped train a host of children and teachers in the school. Through an existing health club within the school, the ICTs have been helped improve the way health information is shared and exchanged within the school and surrounding community.

During club activities, club members and their patron hold discussions around sexuality and HIV/AIDS, personal hygiene and sanitation. Many questions especially on sensitive topics such as sexuality arise and teachers are sometimes at a loss on how to answer them. With the assistance of question/suggestion box placed somewhere within the school compound, pupils are able to anonymously ask such questions. Occasionally, such questions are sent to AfriAfya where answers for them are sought and repackaged into CD-ROMS, posters, brochures and other media formats.

When information is sent back to Diemo, the Club members become very resourceful at this point. With the help of their teachers, they translate this information into song, poetry and drama. These traditional forms of communication enable the children to pass on relevant information to other students, parents and community members at large on the sensitive topics around sexuality, cultural practices and HIV/AIDS as edutainment i.e. education through entertainment. They also print out the health information and pin it up on the school’s notice boards.
